These cookies really do crumble. Today Mikey and I decided to make these cookies I found here on the Martha Stewart website. They are pretty dry (flour and butter) but they have a ginger frosting filling which helps sweeten them up. I really enjoyed the ginger filling, but it was not popular among the boys. Ew, what is that flavor? was Logan's response and Mikey's face said he was not loving it. I really love fresh ginger though so I rather enjoyed it.
Here's what you need:
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar, sifted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Sanding sugar, in assorted colors
Combine all ingredients, form into small 3/4 inch balls, roll in sprinkles, and bake at 350º. I flattened mine a little after the first batch because they don't really melt at all.

For the frosting/filling:
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons finely grated peeled fresh ginger
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon honey
Beat ingredients together and spread between two cookies. Enjoy!

Apparently I come with a log of baggage. Literally, I am notorious for over-packing, over-cramming, and trying to stuff anything I MIGHT need into a bag, usually for a long weekend.

Yesterday I scored a four-piece luggage set at Savers (Thrift) for only $12!! It's pretty much new, looks like the two big suitcases have been used once or twice.  Since I'm planning on studying abroad next year, this will be perfect. It came with one giant suitcase, one large, one medium duffle/rolling bag, and one small carryon. It's my favorite thrifting find of the week!

Sometimes it seems like vacation is busier than the school year. Such is the case the last few weeks, I finally have time to do all the little things I've been wanting to, but time flies by. So here's a few catch-up posts from vacation.

I'll start with a little Christmas. We went down to OKC to see the grandparents for Christmas which was wonderful.
For my mom and grandma, I'd made the Sheri Berry oven mitts and potholders.
My dad loves presents that are practical and take up little or no space, so Logan and I got him these natural Zum soaps that smell SO GOOD.

Here's the oven mitts I made for my mom and Grandma, out of fabric my mom Sheri Berry had designed. We ordered it from Spoonflower, which did a great job of color and fabric quality. I used a tutorial from this website.

Several years ago, my mom found this little vintage Singer Featherweight thrifting. Her mom had one just like it when my mom was a kid, and she had always wanted one of her own. It was in pretty good but not perfect condition, so we ended up taking it to my grandma's house to see if she could get it running smoothly.

A few months ago, my grandma and her sisters came to visit me at Union and brought it so I could have a little sewing machine at school, all fixed up and ready to sew. It's so cute and little and works perfectly. I never got around to blogging about it, so now it's catch-up time.

This weekend we got to spend some time with the family and ended up at an antique mall looking at a sofa cousin Megan was thinking about getting (which by the way is super-cute and is now hers!). I found this great science beaker which I quickly snatched, because you never know when you'll need one of these things. Not sure what I'll used it for yet, but right now it's 200 mL of emptiness.

Came home to find a little Christmas tree in my room! Thanks to my super-awesome thrifty mom!

Would you like to start your day out with some coffee marshmallows?

I've actually always thought that was one of the strangest songs ever. These candies are more just drops of sugar. Plus, drops of Jupiter would really just be drops of gas, since Jupiter has no real surface, just the visible line where the gas appears to stop. If you tried to walk on Jupiter you'd just keep sinking into the gas as it got denser and denser and eventually turned into a liquid.

Ok, enough of that. Basically I just used the recipe from this site and made the flavors coconut, raspberry, orange, and lemon. They weren't too hard to make but were rather time-consuming with lots of boiling and chilling and cutting and rolling in sugar. Still, they were fun and pretty tasty.
